Ira Glass, A Psychopath?

Every week I tend to indulge in a little NPR action while tooling around in the Photoshop. A few podcasts behind, I recently listened to This American Life episode #436, “The Psychopath Test” and was totally enthralled with the idea that a test to assess a person’s psychopathic capacity EXISTS. The PCL-R, created by Robert Hare, was published in the 1990s and is currently used by the American criminal justice system to determine which convicts are fit for parole and which are, essentially, unable to be reformed due to their high tendency toward psychopathic relapse. This blows my mind. The consequences of this deterministic approach to criminal justice are only now beginning to be understood, however Alix Spiegel’s interview with Robert Dixon, an inmate in a California maximum security prison, demonstrates how this test may unfairly limit someone who truly has potential to amend their behavior.

Ira Glass, the show host, mentions in the beginning that he and his entire staff took the PCL-R as they tried to guess who among them would score the highest. Find out which staff member is a certified psycho and take in other tales of testing below. Right down there. Click it. I made it so easy for you.

Mary Monday, um, I mean Wednesday

Okay, I still haven’t come up with something to do with my Wednesday posts, and mostly because I’m lazy I’ve decided to repeat my Mary Monday posts from my personal blogs. Here goes…

It took me ages to actually learn to like my name. All the other girls had fun names like Kimberly and Heather. I felt trapped in plain old Mary. When I started school, I was called Maryann on the roll call (and that was okay because I liked Maryann on Gilligan’s Island and I had no middle name which seemed kind of unique to me) but when my mom gave me my birth certificate I found out that I indeed had a middle name and it was Ann. So I was back to plain old Mary. As I grew older and became more educated, I learned to like my name. Yes it is simple and plain but it carries so much meaning and history. And it is used in so many songs! I thought I’d start posting a Mary song each Monday, accompanied by a famous Mary.

To start things off here’s Sonic Youth with Mary-Christ.

And your famous Mary of the day, Mary Surratt:

Mary Surratt

She was the first woman executed by the US federal government for her role in the Lincoln assassination. You can visit her tavern and house in my home town. Looks like Robert Redford recently made a movie about her.

Outdoor office!

Best way to kick off the summertime- a weekday drawing session in the park with some iced coffee. Heaven in Brooklyn.

Stop your crying. I am BACK.

I am back from my maternity leave and ready to get this party started. I’ll now list the top 5 things I have been doing with my time so you know:

5. Eating cereal…twice a day…everyday.
4. Watching Medium on Netflix streaming.
3.  Having lunch with my non 9-5er friends. <3
2. Playing Godfinger on my iphone.
1. OLIVIA!!!

Light House Film Festival 2011 and a Pink Gorilla

Lighthouse international Film festival is THIS WEEKEND! We’ve been working with them since they started 3 years ago creating their web site, programs and posters. Deanna is behind the design magic of these projects. Let’s take a little walk down typography memory lane of the 2009, 2010, and 2011 festival design.

This is real labor of love project for both Deanna and Mary. The morning after the program went to print the festival organizers were kind enough to send Deanna a singing gorilla gram. Let’s ALL watch and see just how red Deanna gets.

Mad tumbling

Now that there are five folks at OrangeYouGlad, we’ve all been assigned a day of the work week to do a blog post. Today is my day. However, I haven’t decided yet what to do with my weekly Wednesday posts so until I do, I’ll leave you with my last ten tumblr posts.

Shameless Cross Posting

Did these little paintings the other day and posted them over at XTRAPULP/SLURP. OYG’s not terribly active but fun to look at illustration blog.

You can see a few more plus some new ones by our 423 neighbor Erin Shigaki.

Our Favorite Drunken Sailor.

As you may or may not know Veronica has been out for the last three months, hanging out with her very own little drunken sailor, Olivia. Seriously tho, I can’t handle this picture, I CAN’T!

Aaron Koblin’s TED talk. Dreamy.

Watch Aaron Koblin summarize his latest data endeavors, including The Johnny Cash Project, The Sheep Market, and Radiohead’s “House of Cards” music video. Surely you’ve seen Arcade Fire’s “The Wilderness Downtown” Google Chrome project. Yep. This guy. He probably rides monster waves and saves kittens in his spare time. ♥
